Hungry? Here’s a mixtape that’ll get you in the mood for breakfast, courtesy of new local eatery Philly Style Bagels. Back when I was one of the judges at PhilaMOCA’s local music video showcase, one entry that stood out to everybody came from the mysterious Fo Sho & Tell – a DJ / producer whose icy synth textures and jammin’ beats set the score to an animated bagel racing around the streets of Kensington and the Eraserhood. So what if it was basically a commercial? It was bizarre and brilliant.
In the same vein, Fo Sho and Tell’s new mixtape is basically a commercial for Philly Style bagels, but damn if it isn’t a hell of a lot of fun. Made in collaboration with Plastic Little’s DJ Siyoung, Served Fresh mixes up songs from OutKast and Teddy Pendergrass, with Santigold and Annie – broken into sections themed around types of bagels (“Ay Poppy” “Some of that Everything”) and interstitial skits. Those skits are probably the most marketing-y part of the collection, and while they’re pretty funny, if you’re averse to that sort of thing, you may want to skip ahead.
But don’t switch off entirely, since the music will totally get you moving and ready for the day as readily as any toasted sesame and cup of coffee can. Stream it or grab a free download below, and check out the track list, as well as Fo Sho and Tell’s video from the PhilaMOCA competition.
