Daughter | photo by Rachel Del Sordo for WXPN | racheldelsordophotography.comBritish songbird Elena Tonra and her bandmates in Daughter first broke on to the U.S. scene with a string of EPs, one of which featured the original version of their most popular song “Youth.” The band has since released two more albums and was on tour in support of its latest release, Not to Disappear, when it stopped by Union Transfer on Thursday.

Daughter is known for evoking tons of emotion in Torna’s beautiful, simple songs. Her newer work has a synth-pop edge, though, and as Daughter rolled off song after song, I couldn’t help but wish the band would play some older material. I wasn’t alone; audience members shouted out old songs they want to hear, but Torna politely stood her ground: “I’m going to play another new one” she proclaims.

At this I feel bad. We have to allow our favorite artists grow and evolve their sound. But I still couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed that she didn’t play “Landfill” on Thursday night.
