A highly anticipated collection of covers of Grateful Dead songs, Day Of The Dead, is being released on May 20th. Curated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, the all-star collection features 59 songs, with contributions by The Lone Bellow, Jim James, Wilco, the Flaming Lips, Mumford and Sons, Kurt Vile, Lucius, Lucinda Williams, Bela Fleck and many others.
Day Of The Dead is the latest in a long list of themed record releases by the Red Hot Organization. Proceeds from the album go to raising awareness for and curing HIV/AIDS. The digital release, 5 CD box-set, and limited edition vinyl will be available; you can see the full tracklist with artists and songs here.
Two of the songs from the collection, “Touch of Grey” by Philly’s The War On Drugs, and “Sugaree” by Phosphorescent with Jenny Lewis, have Philly connections. “Touch Of Grey” was recorded by Philly producer/engineer Jeff Zeigler at a studio in California and was mixed and Jonathan Low at Miner Street. Low also mixed “Sugaree” at the Fishtown studio.
