The collaborative singer-songwriter trio case / lang / veirs makes its debut this June 17th with a self-titled record on ANTI-, and just released another track from it. While the lead song, “Atomic Number,” beautifully blends the voices and styles of Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs, the new “Best Kept Secret” is very much in Veirs’ court.

It’s a jaunty summertime indie pop number with symphonic touches and an infectious refrain; the song premiered today via Lenny Letter, where Veirs revealed that the song is about Tim Young, who plays guitar in the trio’s live band. Case has this to say about it:

It was beautiful to see Tim playing guitar on the song that Laura had written about her friend, who she adores and admires. I didn’t know him at all until we started making the record, but it was cool to have him come in as this legend and beloved person. I felt as if I was already attached to him, having worked on the song for such a long time. Then he showed up, and he’s even greater than I thought!

The interview also touches on the case / lang / veirs origin story, how they feel about the “supergroup” designation and the ins and outs of collaboration between artists with three very distinct styles.
