Oh, Wilco: The best living, still-together, Americana/roots-rock/experimental/alt-country band of all time performed for NPR Music‘s Mountain Stage for the third time recently, and the show can be listened to in full over at NPR’s website.

Recorded when the band was performing at the Culture Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia, the nine song set features a Bowie cover and two tracks from the Mermaid Avenue records (Woody Guthrie lyrics put to original music). The rest of the setlist makes up a greatest hits of sorts from several of their albums, from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Summerteeth, and the recent Star Wars.

By rephrasing these classic songs in an acoustic setting, the band proves why they ARE the best living, still-together, Americana/roots-rock/experimental/alt-country band of all time. Songs such as “I’m Always In Love” and “War On War”, which are usually played with electronic freak-outs, are transformed into nuanced beauty. But so are “Jesus, etc.” and “California Stars.” And that “Space Oddity” cover. I could go on and on and on.

The best living, still-together, Americana/roots-rock/experimental/alt-country band of all time will be performing in Philly for the first time in years this summer, on Saturday June 4th at the Mann Center. Tickets can be purchased at the XPN Concert Calendar.
