For just two people, Philly duo PINKWASH manage to make quite a bit of sound. Their newest track, “Metastatic,” off their soon-to-be-released debut Collective Sigh, is proof positive. Guitarist and singer Joey Doubek spins a grinding trancelike guitar riff that doesn’t really have a beginning or end. Meanwhile, drummer Ashley Arnwine peppers the track with crashing cymbals and unexpected snare hits.

Much of the inspiration for PINKWASH’s music stems from Doubek’s experience caring for his mother as she died of breast cancer in 2009. Seven years later, you can still sense that pain and bitterness — Doubek’s vocals are rhythmic and choppy, frequently morphing into a wail that echoes as if it were being shouted off of a cliff. As he once described in an interview, “Long after acceptance comes extreme bitterness, which is an easier state to be in to write angry, loud music.”

PINKWASH celebrates its May 13 album release with a show at West Philly’s LAVA Space – get more information on that via Facebook. Until then, listen to “Metastatic” below.
