If you’re a fan on women with distinctive voices and guitars and soulful melodies who write songs with a rootsy flair, it’s been a pretty good day. The big news, of course, being Dolly Parton’s show announcement – but not to be overlooked is the news from Philly scene veteran Birdie Busch, who announced minutes after Parton’s news that she would be headlining Boot & Saddle a few short days after Parton plays The Mann. Not to force the connection too much, of course, but I’m super excited for both gigs: Busch’s Boot & Saddle performance is set for Saturday, June 18th, and tickets are on sale now.

Busch comes to the Boot armed with a new LP called Thunder Bridge; it’s her first in three years, since her acclaimed Birdie Busch and the Greatest Night, and it comes roughly ten years after her breakout sophomore album Penny Arcade. She’s been hard at work on the record for a couple years, in the mix with a move to Germantown and getting involved in some pretty righteous community organizations in the Northwest.

As she said in a feature interview in the Chestnut HillLocal:

People joke that I’m the unofficial mayor of Germantown. I like being involved, even in the wacky, frustrating neighborhood meetings. You realize the ‘crucial-ness’ of it, and you realize that if you participate, you are responsible for seeing really good things happen as opposed to seeing it go in the opposite direction.

Previous word on the record has hinted that the new album will have a Nick Drake vibe, though Busch excels at dynamics and the unexpected…so we’re expecting just about anything.

Once new music is out there in the world, it will be shared in this space, fear not. But in the meantime, listen to a few Busch favorites below, and get tickets and more information on the show here.
