1956 – Elvis Presley makes his Las Vegas debut at the Frontier Hotel.

1959 – The Alan Freed rock and roll movie Go, Johnny, Go premieres in New York. It features Chuck Berry, Jackie Wilson, Ritchie Valens, Eddie Cochran, The Cadillacs, and The Flamingos.

1966 – The Troggs release “Wild Thing” in the US.

1966 – Two dozen local groups appear at a battle of the bands in Matawan Keyport Roller Drome in New Jersey and perform three songs each. The Rogues win first place, second is Sonny & The Starfires, and third place goes to The Castiles (with Bruce Springsteen on vocals). The three winners are given an opportunity to perform at the Roller Drome the following week as opening acts for The Crystals.

1968 – Herb Alpert debuts “This Guy’s in Love With You” on his CBS-TV special.

1969 – John Lennon legally changes his middle name from Winston to Ono.

1969 – The Carpenters sign with A&M Records.

1969 – The Who give their first complete live performance of the rock opera Tommy at a show in Dolton, England.

1993 – The play Tommy officially opens on Broadway at St. James Theater.

1974 – The Who begins filming the movie version of Tommy. Tina Turner’s performance as Acid Queen is shot first. The task of producing the complex soundtrack would drive Pete Townshend to another nervous breakdown.

1977 – The Jam release their first single, “In The City.”

1978 – Gerry Rafferty releases “Baker Street.”

1985 – Prince releases the album Around The World In a Day.

1991 – The Dave Matthews Band play their first ever-live show when they appear at The Earth Day festival in Charlottesville, Virginia.

1998 – Faith No More announce that they are no more.
