NYC indiepop outfit My Favorite has dwelled in the world of underground cult classics for a while now, but the band just released a 7″ of new singles, their second batch of new material since reuniting in 2014. The quintet will bring the recordings to Space 1026 on May 20th for a show with Philly’s Mercury Girls and and The Snow Fairies – the latter being another reunited band from the pop scene.

Formed in Long Island in the 90s, My Favorite experienced a burst of indie pop success for a decade before fizzling out in the early aughties. The band refers to that initial stint as First Empire, during which they released a handful of dark-hued, post-pop albums that drew on sometimes-macabre suburban themes.

A decade later brought a reunion era dubbed Second Empire, which, along with the just-released “Christine Zero” and “Killed for Kicks” below, began with singles “Second Empire” and “Dance With a Stranger.”

My Favorite’s music is drama-filled, synth-laden and reminiscent of Pet Shop Boys, The Smiths and certain moments of The Go-Betweens. A dewey glow often belies their songs’ melancholy lyrics, a style that mimics suburban culture well.

Check out the new tracks below; if they’re new to you, bring yourself up to speed with vintage singles including “The Happiest Days of My Life.”
