Australian blues musician C.W. Stoneking releases his new album, Gon’ Boogaloo this Friday. When you close your eyes and listen to Stoneking’s music, you’re immediately taken back to the sounds of the 1920s and the 1930s.

Born in Katherine, in Australia’s remote Northern Territory, C.W. (Christopher William) was eleven years old when he stumbled across a copy of Living With The Blues, an early blues compilation, in his father’s collection. His curiosity led him to the music Son House, Robert Johnson, Skip James and Bukka White, to gospel blues, Chicago blues, and ragtime.

Self-taught on banjo and guitar, C.W.’s new album, Gon’ Boogaloo, is his third release. He released his debut album, King Hokum, followed by Jungle Blues in 2008.

About the record, Stoneking says

“…This record which took me 6 long years to come by, was finally recorded live in 2 days, without any overdubs or edits, using only 2 microphones, into a 2 track Ampex 351 tape machine out of Capitol Records. Each song was ‘mixed’ live in the room by way of positioning the band (drums, electric & double bass, 4 backing singers, and my guitar amp), at varying distances/degrees around an old RCA 77DX ribbon microphone to achieve the best mix for each tune as it hit the tape, how it arrived at the tape is how it stayed.”

C.W. recently played Boot & Saddle, and while he was in town, recorded a session for an upcoming World Cafe. Below, stream his new album. It’s a collection of upbeat, raw, visceral blues songs that not only takes you back in time, but straight to the dance floor.
