The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage announced its list of 2016 grant recipients, supporting 53 Philadelphia area artists, organizations and innovators in their cultural explorations. Over a dozen of the grants have been awarded to musicians, whose proposed projects include creating compositions that bring broken instruments back to life (Temple Contemporary), revisiting the city’s published jazz history (Jazz Bridge) and starting dialogues through traditional African folk songs (Tokay Tomah).

Other projects of note:

Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture has forged an international collaboration of Arab musicians called (Dis)placed: Poetry, Art, and Music Composition. The multi-part series will host Syrian, Tunisian and Lebanese composers and visual artists as they create and present works that explore the causes and effects of displacement.

Bowerbird’s That Which is Fundamental takes a look at the life and work of Julius Eastman, a Curtis Institute student who composed music in the 70s and 80s before passing away, homeless, at 49. The retrospective includes four concerts that will present nine of Eastman’s compositions in addition to visual works inspired by the music.

The Mural and The Mint’s Michael Kiley will present his interactive Prescription, a vocal / movement performance that explores the root of sound creation within the body. An ensemble of vocalists will move among audience members as all participants reflect on the sounds being created.

PRISM Quartet investigates the relationship between saxophone playing and visual art in their technology-focused Breath Beneathproduction. The group will embark on a complex presentation of image generation and performance as their movements and breath are translated into visual representations via infrared cameras and air sensors.
