Catch Sun Ra Arkestra and many more at Fields Festival in August
Add another awesome nearby festival to the already long list that’s been assembled so far this summer. Fields Festival, taking place August 19-21 in Darlington, MD’s Camp Ramblewood, is a music and arts fest that is totally DIY and sponsor-free.
Roughly midway between Baltimore and Philadelphia, Fields Fest will showcase loads of experimental music acts, as well as film screenings, art exhibits, comedy acts, dance, and poetry. The festival is occurring for the second time, after the first go-around in 2014 was a success.
Philly experimental jazz legends the Sun Ra Arkestra are among the headliners for the three day fest, as well as Dan Deacon, Wume, Horse Lords, Wolf Eyes, Deradoorian, Lower Dens, Weyes Blood, and Container. To help prep you for an August trip to Darlington, we’ve assembled a quick preview of some tunes you might hear. Sun Ra Arkestra: watch the legendary jazz collective cram their big band in for a Tiny Desk performance and be amazed.
Dan Deacon: the Baltimore-based electronic musician released his most recent LP Gliss Riffer last year, featuring “Feel The Lightning.”
Wume: a soundtrack/groove two-piece outfit consisting of April Camlin on synths and Albert Schatz on the synths.
Horse Lords: an experimental rock group that just released an LP Interventions in April, these guys take the saxophone to new levels.
Wolf Eyes: noise music/trip metal from Michigan with a new EP Claustrophbic out now. In all seriousness, this is probably different than anything you’ve heard before.
Deradoorian: the solo work of Angel Deradoorian of Dirty Projectors. Watch a video of “A Beautiful Woman” from 2015’s The Expanding Flower Planet.
Lower Dens: an indie pop four-piece from Baltimore, Lower Dens released Escape From Evil last year featuring “To Die In L.A.”
Weyes Blood: an indie-folk project from Natalie Mering, Weyes Blood released the Celtic-infused Cardamom Times EP last fall.
Container: an electronic project from producer Ren Schofield. “Funnel” was released earlier this year.
