For some 20 odd minutes, Philadelphia musician Beau Brynes invites us to explore his headspace — unguarded yet brooding — by way of Some Nerve, his band Broken Beak‘s second LP.What began as a quiet, acoustic exploration in storytelling a la 2015’s Old Evil, has grown and expanded (in sound and in members) to be able to deliver this year’s poignant and rock heavy release. Joining Brynes to create this fuller sound is bassist Evan Moorehead, drummer Jeff Malt and Modern Baseball guitarist Brendan Lukens.

We’ve already heard album singles “Saint” and “Humble,” but they only tell a small part of the larger story that unfolds on Some Nerve. Opener “Matches” is frayed and foreboding at first, with several different layers strung together like three separate songs in one.

The little-over-one-minute track “Cut Out” has a swaggering effect; Brynes’s curt delivery of insecurity-fueled lines make for an enjoyable dichotomy between showing confidence while completely lacking it.

Album standout “Metal” covers a lot of ground and creates an interesting soundscape with a blanket of seething synths over unceasing guitars. From one extreme to another, the metallic churns are traded halfway for a simple acoustic guitar, every hard reverberation channeling the songs name.

Broken Beak has two upcoming hometown shows at the bookends of their tour, one on July 7th at the Pharmacy and a record release gig on August 18th at PhilaMOCA. Grab tickets and more info at the XPN Concert Calendar and stream Some Nerve below.
