Philly’s Barrett Lindgren has gone from booking house shows while fronting the dearly departed indie/psych crew Ghost Light to working behind the scenes at Fishtown’s Johnny Brenda’s and, more recently, back out on the stage. Earlier this summer, he debuted his new project Permanent Body, a revved up punk four-piece, at the Kensington show space The Storefront. Their second gig saw them opening for Hurry Up at the Everybody Hits batting cages.

With jams reminiscent of The Modern Lovers and Hüsker Dü, there’s a lot for Lindgren and his bandmates to funnel their energy into. In that sense, Permanent Body is a group of seasoned scene players: bassist Kian Sorouri and guitarist Kyle Laganella hail from Loose Tooth (revisit their Key Studio Session here), while drummer Robyn Campbell can also be seen and heard in Blowdryer.

They sounded great at the Cages when I caught them, and even better on the debut EP that came out last week on Bandcamp. Case in point: the Replacements-y “Depraved A.D.,” where Permanent Body strikes a fantastic balance between jangley melodic arpeggios and a fierce lo-fi crunch, with an endlessly catchy hook: “What the body wants, the heart wants.”

Give the song a listen below, grab a name-your-own-price download of the EP here and catch Permanent Body’s next Philly gig on October 6th when they open for Sun Organ at West Philly’s All Night Diner. (UPDATE: Permanent Body is also playing PhilaMOCA on 9/25 with LVL Up, details here.)
