1952 – Ray Charles records his first four songs for Atlantic Records after they buy out his contract with Swingtime.

1954 – DJ Alan Freed makes his move from Cleveland to New York, where he begins broadcasting the “Alan Freed Rock ‘n’ Roll Show” on WINS.

1956 – Eddie Cochran signs a one year contract with Liberty Records. He goes on to give them three top 40 hits over the next several years, including “Summertime Blues,” “Twenty Flight Rock,” and “C’mon Everybody.”

1965 – The television trade publications Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter run an ad seeking “Folk & Roll Musicians-Singers for acting roles in new TV series:” The Monkees.

1977 – Guitarist Jimmy McCulloch departs Wings to help re-form the Small Faces. Drummer Joe English leaves to join Sea Level.

1978 – RCA records releases David Bowie’s album Stage.

1988 – A 4-day “garage sale” of Elton John’s unwanted items comes to an end at Sotheby’s in London. Among the 1,992 treasures auctioned off are the boots he wore in the movie Tommy, stage costumes (including the Statue of Liberty), pinball machines, jukeboxes, tartan bagpipes, soft toy gorillas, walking sticks, pottery mugs of Queen Elizabeth II, art, and furniture. He makes a total of $6.2 million.

1993 – Husband and wife Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love appear on stage together for the first time. They play “Pennyroyal Tea,” which they wrote with each other, and “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” at Club Lingerie in Los Angeles.

1997 – To promote the re-issue of their back catalogue, Led Zeppelin release their first-ever single, “Whole Lotta Love,” 28 years after it originally appeared on their sophomore album.

1998 – Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell proclaims this week of September 8-13 as “Garth Brooks Week.”

2003 – David Bowie performs the first interactive concert when his performance is beamed live into 21 cinemas from Warsaw to Edinburgh. Bowie takes requests from audience members who talk to him via microphones linked to ISDN lines.
