Annville, PA outfit The Mellowells have shared a second single from their forthcoming effort Head Space, following up last month’s “Melting Vibes” with “Tiny Beds.” The band will release their sophomore effort on September 30th before playing a Halloween show at the Chameleon Club in Lancaster on October 29th.

Opening with just a fuzzy guitar and frontman Jesse Barki’s vocals, the confessional tone of the song is set early. A minute in, the arrangement bursts open with a brighter guitar riff and upbeat percussion but Barki is still clearing his thoughts through the lyrics. “It makes perfect sense why I can’t get any rest / cause two people can’t fit in such a tiny bed” he sings. He could be using these lines literally, but it feels more likely that he’s referring to an internal struggle he’s having with himself.

Despite the catchy melody “Tiny Beds” seems to be a pretty dark track about loneliness and social anxiety. But it’s that juxtaposition between sound and content that makes it feel all the more relatable – we all know what it’s like to present a happy, pulled-together demeanor when you actually feel like you’re about to lose it.
