With the Fall Fund Drive behind us (and a BIG thank you to all our new members!) we turn our attention to all the NEW music that’s come in over the last week. Included in the stacks is a new song from David Gray, something new from Dirty Projectors AND a former member of the Dirty Projectors.  Plus, we’ll hear what Nada Surf sounds like backed by an orchestra and dig into the new Phish record too.  Here are a few more things we’ve got planned for you tonight at 8 o’clock on XPN …

“Cranes in the Sky” by SOLANGE

Her sister is perhaps the biggest star in the music world today. However, with the release of her new album A Seat At The Table, Solange is just as deserving of your ears. First of all, stylistically she’s a different singer than Beyonce. There is a unparalleled power and boldness to Beyonce and her music. So, rather than try to compete Solange offers us a more artful interpretation of her music. The album flourishes in its beauty and delicacy and with that said, she delivers an album that has a timeliness to it and perspective.

“Blow The House Down” by DARLINGSIDE

We became quick fans of the acoustic-based band Darlingside. The intimacy of their music and the craftiness of their musicianship makes them standout performers.  As a mini follow-up to their album Birds Say, the band just released an EP called Whippoorwill.  In addition to a fun cover of the Smashing Pumpkins “1979”, they’ve recorded this song (“Blow The House Down”) which had been part of their live repertoire.

First Impression Artist: AARON LEE TASJAN

He’s been called a ‘cosmic cowboy’. Aaron Lee Tasjan is an interesting guy.  His new record Silver Tears is coming out later this month and for a lot of people it’s an introduction.  But the singer-songwriter, originally from New Albany, Ohio, has played with a number of different bands including the New York Dolls.  You wouldn’t know it by this latest project, but nonetheless these new songs are worthy of your attention.  His songs are filled with great imagery and the music matches the mood.  We’ll dig in tonight, but here’s a song called “Memphis Rain” to give you a little taste.
