1922 – The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the first national broadcasting corporation, is founded on this day in London.

1957 – Paul McCartney and John Lennon perform together for the first time after McCartney joins Lennon’s band the Quarrymen. The show takes place at New Clubmoor Hall in their hometown of Liverpool, and Paul plays guitar.

1964 – Taking a day off from their British tour, The Beatles go into the studio and complete recording six album tracks and the A-side of their next single, “I Feel Fine.” They also finish “Eight Days a Week,” “Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey Hey,” “Mr. Moonlight,” “I’ll Follow the Sun,” “Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby,” “Rock and Roll Music,” and “Words of Love.”

1966 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience play their first gig as a band supporting French pop star Johnny Hallyday at the Paris Olympia in France.

1969 – Rod Stewart joins Faces, formerly known as The Small Faces.

1969 – The Jackson 5 make their TV debut and first appearance as a Motown act when they appear on the variety show Hollywood Palace.

1974 – Al Green suffers second degree burns when his then-girlfriend Mary Woodson pours a pot of boiling grits on him. She then commits suicide with his gun. He takes the the incident as a message from God and turns his life and music to ministry.

1975 – Simon & Garfunkel, who broke up in 1970, get back together to perform a new song, “My Little Town,” on the second ever episode of Saturday Night Live.

1996 – Joni Mitchell is interviewed by Morrissey for the promotional CD Words and Music by Reprise Records to promote her new releases, Hits and Misses.

2000 – Rage Against The Machine lead singer, Zack De La Rocha, quits the politically charged rock band. His statement says, “I feel that it is now necessary to leave Rage because our decision-making process has completely failed. It is no longer meeting the aspirations of all four of us collectively as a band, and from my perspective, has undermined our artistic and political ideal.”

2005 – Live Aid co-founder Midge Ure collects his OBE from the Queen for his music and charity work. The 52 year-old ex-Ultravox singer wore a kilt for the occasion at Buckingham Palace, London.

2008 – Adele appears on Saturday Night Live along with then US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The show earns its highest ratings in 14 years with a total of 17 million viewers. Adele, who performs “Chasing Pavements” and “Cold Shoulder,” tops the iTunes charts the following day and the singer’s debut album jumps 35 places to #11 on the US chart the following week.

2011 – The Stone Roses officially announce they will reunite after a fifteen-year split. The band confirms three gigs at Heaton Park in Manchester and claim a world tour & new album are in the works.
