When we’ve met Sonja Sofya in the past, she was often accompanying one of several different local projects – Ryan Tennis’ Clubhouse Band or Ross Bellenoit, for example – on piano and backing vocals. But on the few occasions where she was front and center (like this Kettle Pot Tracks session), she stole the show. Now the Philadelphia musician is stealing the show again with her new Patterns We Know record, released today.

The album is a 360 view of Sofya as a songwriter, pulling sounds from all points along the genre spectrum. Opening track “I Want” is a burst of colorful energy that would fit in on the Empire Records soundtrack, while “Devil Dancing” features a cabaret-worthy horn section. “Eastern Gardens” is a rippling song for a rainy day that comes a couple of tracks ahead of album standout “You Are Who,” whose swaying mood propels a crescendo that will stick with you. Sofya’s voice is at the core of everything though, dramatic one moment and confiding in the next.

Listen to Patterns We Know below and pick up tickets here for Sofya’s record release show with The Dove & The Wolf and Arc Divers at Boot & Saddle on Thursday, October 20th.
