Every week has a weekend. And after all the yelling, accusing, and all-out Facebook warfare of last week, maybe a psychedelic dance band from Australia is exactly what the doctor ordered. It was for me, at least, and Friday afternoon at World Cafe Live, Jagwar Ma filled that prescription to a T.

A few weeks ago, the band released their sophomore LP Every Now & Then, and its deep, visceral grooves were on full display. From the playful, swaying bounce of opener “Loose Ends” to the rattling, four-on-the-floor drive of “Say What You Feel,” each song flowed cohesively into the next without losing its own distinct, musical identity. Old favorites like “Uncertainty” and “Ordinary” felt right at home, while trance-y, new cuts like “Give Me A Reason” and “OB 1” exhibited a patient slow burn without sacrificing their pop appeal. After a trip down memory lane with sunny Howlin’ highlight “Come Save Me,” Jagwar Ma launched into their final number, the spacious, soaring single “Slipping.” Look around to see if anyone’s watching; then, try saying that five times fast.

From start to finish, the Sydney trio kept the energy high and the bass low. See photos below, watch videos of the performance via VuHaus and listen to an audio archive of the entire set.
