After contributing his talents to countless Philly projects — Lithuania, mewithoutYou, Hop Along and more — Dominic Angelella is finally putting a record out that bears his name. Goodnight Doggies is the debut from his eponymous new band Dominic, and lucky for you, they’ve just premiered its second track, “Savior.” For a song that deals with acolytes, messiahs, and evil itself, it sounds awfully carefree, but that’s just part of its charm.

“Savior” hinges on a delicate balance between its sweet and sour elements, placing crunchy guitars under sunny melodies and harmonies. While the drums and guitars may have the punch of a modern record, the playful lyrics bear the mark of songwriters the likes of Harry Nilsson and Leonard Cohen. Finger-pointing lines like “Narcissistic people breed narcissistic kids” are tempered by a warm bed of “oohs” and “aahs”, but the track never leans too far in either direction. Dominic’s pop side invites you to dance while the rock side keeps you moving, making “Savior” about as magnetic as the dogma-spewing cult leaders for which its named. Stream it below.

Goodnight Doggies is out February 3rd via Lame-O Records. This January 5th, Dominic will play The Boot & Saddle as part of his label’s second annual Rock Residency, a series of benefit shows featuring members of the Lame-O roster and more. This particular show will benefit Planned Parenthood. For tickets and more information, head over to XPN’s Concert Calendar.
