This Thursday, experimental rock trio Square Peg Round Hole will release a new, ambient EP entitled Five Years. It’s a bold departure for a band whose sound has always depended so heavily on its lush rhythm section, and you can hear that departure clear as day on its meditative closer, “So Far, Not Close”. It’s a slow-burner of a track that begins with pulsing, ambient samples and organ, gradually blooming to include a live horn section. Stream it below.

The experimentation doesn’t stop there, though. For the moment, Five Years will only be available with the purchase of a limited edition lithograph and t-shirt designed by the band’s Carlos Pacheco-Perez. You can preorder the EP bundles now via Spartan Records. On the same night as its release, Square Peg Round Hole will deliver a one-time-only performance of Five Years at Philadelphia’s Crane Arts, featuring the same horn section you can hear on “So Far, Not Close.” Head over to XPN’s Concert Calendar for tickets and more information.
