Born in Galway, 21 year-old roots singer-songwriter Holly Macve was discovered singing in a basement bar in Brighton by Bella Union Records co-founder Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins). Informed by country and folk records she grew up listening to with her family, MacVe’s songwriting and vocals sound wise beyond her years.

Bella Union releases her debut album, Golden Eagle on March 3rd, and you can get a taste of it in this week’s Gotta Hear Song, “No One Has The Answers.” The acoustic country-folk shuffle paired with Macve warm, wistful delivery are reminiscent of Lucinda Williams and Kirsty Maccoll while carrying a confidence and personality of their own.

The song is a meditation of life, imbued equally with spiritual hope and uncertainty, as Macve sings: “People put their faith in God. They don’t think, they just not their head. / They just wanna know when they die where they’re gonna go.”
