Today, we remember the great Martin Luther King, Jr. and his fight for equality, organizing communities and combating racism with nonviolent resistance in the 1950s and 60s.

The Civil Rights era is intrinsically intertwined with music: from group spirituals sang on the long marches from Selma to Montgomery, to The Staple Singers and their iconic “Freedom Road,” to the white folksingers of the era that were allies of the movement.

On last night’s episode of the WXPN Folk Show, host Ian Zolitor presented an hour of songs and sounds of the Civil Rights Era — speeches by Dr. King and Medgar Wiley Evers, selections from The Staple Singers and The Original Canton Spirituals, songs by Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs, and new interpretations by Kaia Kater and Rhiannon Giddens.

Listen to a Spotify playlist of Ian’s show below and let it inspire you to stay involved in your world today.
