Nightlands channels Simpsonwave in new “Lost Moon” video
Dave Hartley is rolling out more material from his latest Nightlands project I Can Feel the Night Around Me, this week sharing a surreal video for lead single “Lost Moon.” The album is out on May 5th via Western Vinyl, and Nightlands will wrap up an accompanying tour at Johnny Brenda’s on May 27th (featuring Eliza Hardy Jones, Jesse Hale Moore, Anthony LaMarca, and Scott Churchman alongside Hartley in the live set-up).
The inspiration for this clip came from a somewhat unlikely place: the “Simpsonwave” trend that, for the last year, has filled YouTube with early scenes of The Simpsons set against vaporwave music. In a post on Facebook, Hartley says he was “enamored” with the mash-up and “tracked down Lucien Hughes, who started the sub-genre.” With an eye and ear for turning random, two second-long bits of images into color-washed, trippy scenes and pairing them with the mellowed out, spacey vibe of “Lost Moon,” Hughes created a video that carries you through a non-sequitur world of Bob Ross-y purple waterfalls, 90s Windows screensavers, and a desert filled with Man Ray’s Object to Be Destroyed.
