Over the past five years, Philadelphia four-piece Roof Doctor has brought tight-as-hell instrumental jams and a healthy dose of cutting snark to the local basement show scene. That concludes tonight, as the band plays its farewell show at Eraserhood performing arts space PhilaMOCA. To go out with a couple new jams — and leave no piece of recorded content unreleased — Roof Doctor unveiled one final EP, So Long And Thanks For Nothing, a title that couldn’t be more them if it tried.

Always a group to push themselves sonically, the band explores anthemic pop-punk riffs and refrains on the outset of “Blood Drive”; I can imagine this same song, dressed up in big and bold Will Yip-style production, radiating out of a Warped Tour playlist somewhere, though it’s pretty rad as it is (and more true to Roof Doctor) with the more modest approach we hear here. At the midway point, that song transitions into jangley pop more akin to moments of the band’s back catalog, while we hear a bit of an Afropop divergence on the B-side, “Frosting.”

Drummer and producer Kevin Paschall tells us that the songs were being held onto for a split that never came to fruition, so they decided to release them on their own here; listen below, and grab a name-your-own price download at Bandcamp. Roof Doctor plays its final show tonight at PhilaMOCA with Yes Yes 1000x Yes and Mumblr; more information can be found at its Facebook event page.
