As John Mayer and his full band ensemble reappear on stage, Mayer walks to the microphone with a swagger, taking a few moments to address the crowd before beginning the fourth chapter of the night. He speaks about everyone in the audience feelin’ their “Friday vibes” on that Friday night, April 7th, at the Wells Fargo Center.

Addressing an entire arena bursting at the seems with loving fans, he talks about how he just isn’t nervous like he use to be. It got a lot easier, he says, especially after he quit drinking. However, he’s able to comfort himself with the fact that any person in the audience will give him a ride home if he’s too drunk, and of course a couch to sleep on, he says. After sharing a laugh with the audience on that note and thanking them all, he and his band go into playing “Moving On and Getting Over,” a song off of one of Mayer’s newest EPs, Wave One: The Search For Everything.

Mayer and his band are performing their The Search For Everything World Tour in chapters. Chapter one: full band. Chapter two: acoustic/solo. Chapter three: trio. Chapter four: full band (reprise). But it doesn’t stop there, Mayer also performs a two song encore and an intimate epilogue, resulting in just shy of two hours full of decades of beloved songs.

Chapter one: full band, kicks off the shows with old favorites such as “Why Georgia,” off of Room For Squares, as well as newer songs, such as “Love On The Weekend.” Mayer goes through the set without much talking, but a hell of a lot of guitar solos and jams to fill that space.

Chapter two: acoustic/solo, consisting of some of Mayer’s all time favorite fan hits, throws the crowd back to 2003 when he begins playing “Daughters,” off of Heavier Things. To watch the crowd sway as one and sing along together, “I know a girl, she puts the color inside of my world,” the opening line of the song, is truly a sight to see. Of course Mayer has to play his famous cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” the song he ends this chapter with.

Chapter three: trio, or more commonly referred to as the John Mayer Trio, consists of Pino Palladino, Steve Jordan, and Mayer himself. They take to stage following a short video about the trio, which plays as equipment made its way on and off stage. (Watch the video above!) Following the brief film, the trio goes into a three song set, ending with a Jimi Hendrix Experience cover of “Wait Until Tomorrow,” taking Mayer back to his roots, as he says in the video.

To bring it full circle, after the brief darkness, Mayer reemerges with his full band to play chapter four: full band (reprise). This chapter of the show is a personal favorite of mine, as Mayer ends the chapter with a 9-minute long version of “Gravity,” which is off of the 2006 release, Continuum.

The end of the night brings Mayer on stage for a final song, solo style. As he sits as his piano in the dark, and begins to play “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me,” another song off of, Wave One: The Search For Everything, as the lights come back on, the crowd greets him with a final welcome Mayer will not soon forget. John, bring your Friday night vibes back soon! Sincerely, Philly. Check out more photos below!
