(Sandy) Alex G further challenges the idea of what “an Alex G song” sounds like on two new jams

When Philly’s (Sandy) Alex G announced their new LP ROCKET earlier this year, two new songs came with it, and they were very different from one another. The consensus was around here at Key HQ was that “Witch” sounded “pretty much like an Alex G song” — languid, melancholic, sorta Pavement-y — while the beautiful “Bobby” and its elegant infusion of folk arrangements and vocal harmonies was an exciting new direction for the Havertown-bred artist.

Evidently, frontman Alex Giannascoli is not trying to be typecast, as two additional new jams from ROCKET made their way into the world today, and each presents another layer of redefining that notion of “an Alex G song” is.

First, there’s “Sportstar,” a beautiful ballad based around piano and surreal vocal processing; hear it below in its video shot on the Race Street Pier.

“Brick,” by comparison, is hammering and dissonant, with Giannscoli screaming over distorted industrial rock rhythms and evoking (likely unintentionally, but who knows) Front 242 and Skinny Puppy. Which me circa 1993 is totally into.

That makes five songs from ROCKET that are available for listening right now, and it’s clearly shaping up to be (Sandy) Alex G’s most varied and adventurous set to date. The record is out on May 19th via Domino and band heads out on a summer tour with Japanese Breakfast — who, interestingly, also released a new song today with wonderful use of autotune / vocoder. Get the full tour dates below, and find details on their July 8th stop at Union Transfer at the XPN Concert Calendar.
