Moor Mother‘s Camae Ayewa will expand her footprint on the Don Giovanni label this June with the release of Crime Waves, a joint effort with fellow Philly producer Mental Jewelry. The collaborators shared the EP’s opening track “Hardware” last week.

According the Bandcamp description, the EP was recording at Kawari Sound right outside the city limits and gets its inspiration from avant-classical compositions. The lyrics return to the themes of institutional racism and violence that Ayewa brings to light in her solo material, but Mental Jewelry’s production style polishes the usually-raw and untethered sound we’re used to hearing from Moor Mother. On Bandcamp, Ayewa writes:

Two of these tracks – “Hardware” and “Death Booming” – were meant for Fetish Bones but I couldn’t get them to sound how I wanted…. I really loved Mental Jewelry’s production though, so I suggested that we make an EP. We had bonded over free jazz, drum and bass, and heavy dub – we just spent hours talking about music before we even recorded a track.

Stream “Hardware” below. Crime Waves is out June 16th.
