Love it or hate it, Paramore‘s first album in four years is not exactly the same sound that brought the band from its Nashville roots to the stage it’s at now. The angsty teens that started in high school are long grown up and any trace of punk has turned to pure pop. But stick around through the bulk of After Laughter, released last Friday, and you’ll hear a familiar voice. Instead of those iconic Hayley Williams vocals, The album’s penultimate track features Aaron Weiss of Philly punk mainstays mewithoutYou on the mic.

It’s not the first time the two parties have teamed up. Williams lent her voice to mewithoutYou’s 2012 album Ten Stories on the track “Fox’s Dream of the Log Flume.” This time around, the Paramore tune “No Friend” features Weiss’ voice underlaying gloomy instrumentals. Considering it’s an album that offers a bubbly sound for the most part, especially on its singles, it’s easy to imagine some surprise from Paramore fans at the change of pace. As seen in this reddit post, one user’s labeling of the song as a sort of interlude kind of makes sense. Give “No Friend” a listen below.

In more Paramore news, the band has just announced a tour in support of After Laughter that includes an Oct. 10 stop at the Sands in Bethlehem. California duo Best Coast will open the show. Tickets are on sale May 24 at 10 a.m. For more info, head to the XPN Concert Calendar.
