1963 – The Beatles record their first BBC radio program, Pop Go the Beatles. The bands’ guests for this first show are the Lorne Gibson Trio.

1970 – Peter Green plays his last gig with Fleetwood Mac when they appear at the Bath Festival in Somerset, England.

1974 – David Bowie releases his eighth studio album, Diamond Dogs.

1975 – Earth Wind and Fire go to #1 on the US singles chart with “Shining Star,” the group’s first and only song to top the charts in the country.

1977 – Marc Bolan plays his last show with T. Rex. The concert takes place at Gröna Lund in Stockholm, Sweden, with Bolan the only original member of the band at that point. The singer would die in an auto accident a few months later on September 16.

1979 – Phil Collins, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford of Genesis give their fans a surprise thrill by manning the box office and selling their own tickets to the upcoming show at the Roxy in Los Angeles.

1982 – Topper Headon leaves the Clash.

1983 – Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet break up the band Yaz.

1989 – Mavis Staples releases her album Time Waits For No One.

1998 – Philadelphia mayor Ed Rendell proclaims May 24th “Van Halen Day” in Philadelphia.

2004 – An auction of Bruce Springsteen’s birth certificate on eBay is shut down by the Boss’ legal team.
