Deer Scout enters their blue period in the dreamlike “Sad Boy” video

Dena Miller’s local project, Deer Scout, released a video for their song “Sad Boy” — and like the rest of Deer Scout’s small but mighty catalogue, this tune completely captivates from the first honest lyric to the last.

Opening with a shot of Miller painting on electric blue lipstick, the song hazily jumps in with a floaty guitar and Miller’s amazingly clear, light vocals. Beginning with the line, “Mom and Dad, don’t worry / somebody will want me,” Miller’s saccharine voice mixes with the melancholy mood to create a bittersweet and earnest tone. Steadily infusing synth-y, electro pop elements, along with shifting visual backdrops of a neon arcade, the contrast between the lyrics and music is highlighted even further.

Talking with The Le Sigh, Miller discusses how the song’s namesake and chorus riffs on the predominantly male indie scene; where “sad boys” are largely praised for their vulnerability, while female/trans/non-binary musicians are often overlooked for their honesty and openness because these are perceived as normative feminine qualities. “Sad Boy” gives due credit to these women — serving as a quiet yet powerful anthem for all the brave songwriters out there.
