Australian guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jen Cloher will perform at WXPN’s Free At Noon this Friday, November 3rd at World Cafe Live. Cloher — who is married to Courtney Barnett, and co-founder of Milk! Records with her — is an excellent songwriter/guitarist is her own right, as showcased on her recently released self-titled album.

The song that starts the album, “Forgot Myself,” was recorded with Barnett on guitar and her bassist Bones Sloane, along with drummer Jen Sholakis. It’s got a musical vibe reminiscent of early Patti Smith (with lyrics that reference Ms. Smith in the song), and is about what happens when you make someone else’s needs more important than your own.

Cloher, in an interview with The Guardian , speaks about how as a musician, and partner to Barnett, she’s had to square her career on her own terms, as her partner Barnett’s has taken off. This album, written when Barnett was touring the world, finds Cloher reconciling and reflecting, banging out rock and roll songs filled with strength and personal insight.

Listen to “Forgot Myself” below. You can RSVP for this week’s Free At Noon with Cloher here. After she plays this week’s Free At Noon and opening for Courtney and Kurt Vile at this Friday’s show at the Tower Theatre, Cloher returns to Johnny Brenda’s on January 31st.
