Atmospheric rock locals Maitland headline at Johnny Brenda’s tonight, their biggest local gig since the June release of the Glimpse LP. That record fused Josh Hines’ pensive, empathetic songwriting with propulsive rock care of his bandmates Alex Hines on Bass, Adam Shumski on drums and Evan Moffatt on lead guitar. Tonight, the band is joined by equally emotive Philly artist Abi Reimold, who released the impressive Wrigglingthe XPN Concert Calendar LP in 2016, as well as atmospheric rock instrumentalists Square Peg Round Hole. Tickets and more information on the show can be found at ; watch the band play “Sycamore” in their Key Studio Session below.

We came across Philly artist Veev back in April during the course of the Items Tagged Philadelphia project, and found their Friends With Your Friends EP to be immediately beguiling. At the time I called the music “melancholic indie folk jams for sad nights in quiet corners” and had this to say: “Kindred spirits of Free Cake For Every Creature, Kimya Dawson, Regina Spektor and Mirah, Veev is a haunting and oddly comforting voice to emerge from the Philly home-recording scene.” Tonight Veev is on a bill with Bryant Eugene Vazquez and more at The Pharmacy; details and information can be found at its Facebook event page.

If you’re into 8-bit chiptune electronic music, the Icebox Project Space in Kensington is where you’ll want to post up for the next few days. The fifth annual 8Static Fest kicks off tonight with eight bands paired up with eight video artists, headlined by Cheap Dinosaurs and Claire Kwong. The fest continues through Sunday; tickets and more information can be found here.
