Find your community in Worriers’ new video for “The Possibility”
Philly-via-Brooklyn punk rockers Worrierstake us to through a sunny summer day in Asbury Park in their new video for “The Possibility,” a track from the band’s recently-released sophomore album Survival Pop. As we follow the video’s protagonist around on a bicycle, though, it becomes clear that the laid-back vibes of the Jersey Shore aren’t always so idyllic.
“The Possibility” is songwriter Lauren Denitzio’s response to growing up queer in New Jersey, feeling out of place and trying to find community. “Searching for a song about a love that might have been between anxiety and hindsight,” Denitzio sings, as we see just how isolating a crowded boardwalk can be. The video, directed by Emily Dubin, ends with Denitzio and their bandmates welcoming the lonely character into their party, as they all take comfort in their group of friends.
As Denitzio shared on the band’s Facebook page:
“I grew up loving music about the shore and young love and classic cars and one dimensional waitresses. It was a nostalgia for a time that never existed for me, at least not the comfort of being out of the closet or enjoying my home state in the way all those boys in songs did. I wanted to write something that reflected my reality while growing up a queer kid in New Jersey, rolling my eyes at the version of girls in those songs that were just there to smoke cigarettes and be saved. I wanted this song, and at the end of the day every song, to be my answer to the narrative places in music that never held space for folks outside heteronormative relationships or the gender binary.”
