Speedy Ortiz gets absorbed in constant connection (and slime) in “Lucky 88” video

Indie rock band Speedy Ortiz has announced its upcoming third studio album Twerp Verse, which drops April 27th via Carpack. Three years have passed since Speedy Ortiz released Foil Deer; the new album will be the first to feature Philly guitarist Andy Molholt, from Laser Background. 

The leading track on Twerp Verse, “Lucky 88,” stays true to the band’s grungy riffs and alluring vocals, at the same time incorporating new elements, such as an intense synth undercurrent — something reminiscent of band leader Sadie Dupuis’ solo project Sad13.

Throughout the video, a slime monster consumes the band while Dupuis remains focused on her phone, completely unaware of everything around her. The video addresses the overuse of technology and constant connection how easy it is to get absorbed in it. The song and the music video were both cynical and baneful, yet simple.
