At a recent Free at Noon at World Cafe Live, Nightmares On Wax created a living room onstage with couches and chairs where the band lounged, performing songs from their new album, Shape The Future. George Evelyn, the man behind NOW, has been making records, producing, DJ’ing and keeping hip-hop music moving forward since the debut Nightmares On Wax album in 1991.

Adept at weaving hip-hop, jazz, soul, house, trip-hop, reggae and R&B music into his compositions, Evelyn’s new album relies on an excellent cast of collaborators including UK singers Sadie Walker, LSK, former Zero 7 singer Mozez, and Australian soul singer and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Rakei who handles lead vocals on “Typical.”

“Typical” sounds like it could have come out of Motown’s deep R&B and soul vaults circa 1967. Rakei’s vocals recall Marvin Gaye, and it’s mesmerizing charm is its laidback, sultry vibe. Listen to “Typical” below.
