Listen to Mirah ride the waves of love in “Ordinary Day,” from new LP Understanding
Before Mirah releases Understanding, her first album in four years, next week, she’s shared another single from the record with BrooklynVegan. “Ordinary Day” is the fourth song the Pennsylvania-rooted, New York-based songwriter has shared from the forthcoming album, which will be released September 7 on her own label, Absolute Magnitude Recordings.
Each song we’ve heard off the new record has a distinctly different sound, and the offbeat, experimental “Ordinary Day” is no exception. Backed by minimal, mystical synths, Mirah lets her voice take the lead as the song opens, introducing different whimsical sounds as it progresses, weaving waves of ups and downs. Throughout the last quarter of the winding, four-minute track, Mirah repeats the lines “We won’t stop falling in love / Don’t stop falling in love.” Of the self-described love song, she explains:
“It’s always strange to write love songs, to fall in love, when the world feels like it’s falling into a dark hole. But we have to. It’s useful actually. Love lifts the world up. It makes it so you can wake up crying, but then look over at the one you love and know that you can face the world, together and separately, and bring beauty and bring peace, not just to each other, but to everyone you meet and every place you go. Love is a strong power.”
