Soccer Mommy, led by the enigmatic Sophie Allison, has been on a roll lately, between the release of spring 2018 album Clean to touring with the likes of Paramore and Liz Phair. Her latest project was the recording of a Springsteen cover, “I’m On Fire.” This track, along with a re-recorded track of For Young Hearts opener “Henry” will be released on a 7″ in October via Fat Possum.

In the torrent of big-business tribute bands and cover song mania, Soccer Mommy’s take is refreshing. She abandons any marketable pandering for an authentic take on a massively popular song. The departure from blue-collar-hero, Midwestern heartland rock doesn’t feel like a loss. Allison refrains from imitation, and the result is a stripped-down, dolefully-sung track that evokes shivers.

Listen to the cover below. Check out Soccer Mommy at First Unitarian Church on December 8th, 2018. Tickets and info can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
