Your Smith is the latest chapter in the musical evolution of Caroline Smith. She moved from Minnesota to Los Angeles several years ago, changed her name from Caroline Smith to Your Smith — both things the singer and songwriter describe as a significant move for her.

Last heard from, Smith released her album, Half About Being A Woman, almost five years ago to this month. She recently told the Minnesota/St. Paul City Pages:

“Moving to L.A. was a huge transition. It was a hard thing to do, but it definitely helped push me as an artist. I’ve been settling in to L.A., settling in to what I want to do with my music, and who I want to be as an artist. Minneapolis is so comfortable. Leaving Minneapolis, and leaving that comfort, was the single greatest thing I did for my creative career.”

Smith began performing in Minneapolis after she moved from her home town of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota to attend the University of Minnesota in 2006. Her early releases were indie-folk influenced, and About Being A Woman signaled a move towards a more R&B influenced sound. Your Smith finds her steeped in a more pop leaning sound. A recently released four song EP, Bad Habit, is out on Neon Gold Records.

Your Smith plays Johnny Brenda’s this Tuesday, October 2nd; tickets and more information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar. Below, watch the video for “The Spot,” and listen to the EP.
