Over the years, we’ve seen Philly singer-songwriter Adrianne Gold in any number of bands with any number of names; the trippy Daisy Glaze / Sad Heaven, the raw and punky Tender Vision, the twee electropop of Catnaps. This week, she unveiled the latest tab on her C.V., a dreampop outfit called Crying In Public that released a two-song demo called SAD NECTAR on Bandcamp.
The vibe of this set is very much like the closing scene of Lost In Translation or the Bang Bang Bar in Twin Peaks; very “Just Like Heaven” by The Jesus and Mary Chain, very “Falling” by Julee Cruise. Retro pop beats patter from drum machines, mixing with timeless melodies and a dose of reverb; Gold sings about toxic dudes and toxic hair (or not, I just love the idea that “Untameable Curls” might be about salon challenges) and delivers some of the strongest vocals we’ve heard from her. I almost want to hear more of her voice and less of the vibe; maybe that’s enroute as she works on the album. In the meantime, listen to the demo below.
Crying in Public plays its debut show at Cousin Danny’s Lounge in West Philly on Friday, November 9th, with a solo set by Swanning’s Cynthia Schemmer, as well as Brigid Mae Power, a touring artist from Ireland. More information on the show can be found here.
