It’s true that the late Charles Bradley spent much of his life trying to be James Brown — for years, he made a living impersonating the hardest working man in show business under the moniker “Black Velvet” in Brooklyn nightclubs. While his own music is certainly influenced by Brown’s energized sound, Bradley found his own voice reviving the heart-aching R&B music that rose in parallel with Brown’s funk. You can hear that in full effect on the nostalgic “Can’t Fight the Feeling,” the latest teaser track from Bradley’s posthumous record Black Velvet, out November 9 via Dunham Records.
