Experimental punk seven-piece Impressionist have returned with two singles off upcoming album There Is No Try, due out November 2 via local indie label Bunny Cat.

“Anxiety Meditation” unfolds in multiple movements over the course of seven minutes. In reflection of the title, the instrumentation is anxious and sporadic, vocalist Kyle Press repeating “I don’t know why I do this to myself” over and over, as if caught in a spiraling thought loop. An urgent trombone splinters over distorted electric guitars and eccentric keyboards. The song constantly threatens to lose coherence, trembling violently at the edges before regaining its train of thought.

“Cat Song” fuses heavy metal and jazz, wiry saxophone melodies meeting a wall of pounding drums. Press heaves out each verse, his breathing brambled. The song dissolves into the crash of cymbals and galaxy synths, a fitting psychedelic fadeout.

Impressionist plays an album release show for There Is No Try at Johnny Brenda’s on November 1st. Find tickets + info at the XPN Concert Calendar.
