As of an hour or so ago, Joey Sweeney and the Neon Grease are winging their way to the midwest, where they have a string of tour dates in Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis in support of their new LP Catholic School.

This week, with election day just around the corner, Sweeney and the band released a new non-album single inspired by a meme that was circulating the internet in 2017: “This Is The Future That Liberals Want.”

As Sweeney writes in a website launching the song:

What I wanted to do was express more directly the idea that was implicit but unstated in so many of the memes I saw: The Future That Liberals Want isn’t some fearsome place where ferrets and terrorists were having a needle exchange disco. It’s just a place where everybody gets a fair shake, where empathy and kindness aren’t treated like radical ideas.

In these days and times, I know that can sound naive to the point of being blithe. And I suppose on some level it is. But what’s in this song is, I hope, the basic stuff we all can agree on, the stuff worth fighting for, the stuff you gotta stop and enjoy just to get the fight back in you: A nice breeze, a cool buzz, nobody robbin’ out the back when you’re trying to protect the front.
