XPN’s Gotta Hear Song of the Week: “Gold” by Sister Sparrow

Fronted by Arleigh Kincheloe since 2011, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds are a soul rock band from Brooklyn. Over the last few years, several of the original Dirty Birds moved away from Brooklyn, leaving Kincheloe on her own to pursue more of a solo-focused project. The results, heard on her new album Gold, have a broader musical appeal, yet maintain the same powerful soul / rock feel to the songs.

Kincheloe has a commanding voice – big, bold and confident. The new album, Gold, builds on the work she did with the Dirty Birds over the years, but takes it in new directions. Recorded just several months after she became a mother, she worked on the record with producer Carter Matschullat, whom she met in 2016 during a songwriting session.

Sister Sparrow is currently on tour and plays the TLA this Friday night, November 9th. The band is also playing WXPN’s Free At Noon at World Cafe Live this Friday. You can RSVP here for the Free At Noon.

Below, listen to the title song to Gold, an upbeat, pop driven tune peppered with a tight funky horn arrangement.
