Johnny Utah takes DIY pop out of the bedroom on Big Dogs EP

Jacob Sullenger, a.k.a. Johnny Utah, is a Philly native who’s been staking his claim in the DIY scene with a steady release of Bandcamp singles, and viral Tweets that have leveraged him a cult-like following. His latest EP Big Dogs goes beyond the boundaries of bedroom pop.

Every song combines a different vibe, but the instant hit is lead track “Crazy For Your Love.” Driven by funk grooves and a catchy hook, the song is full of frantic energy and danceable beats. The vocals veer between a ridiculous falsetto to spoken word in a nonsensical arrangement. Nothing about this song should work, but somehow it does, and I can’t stop listening to it.
