In their flurry of a tour to Austin and back for SXSW, Foxtrot & the Get Down dropped the video for their discofied rocker “Battered & Blue,” and you’re 100% guaranteed to feel good after you watch it. Whether it’s meant to make you laugh or not, you will anyway. This video feels like Foxtrot is finally ready to cut loose and change up their sound a little bit, because this take probably wasn’t what anyone was expecting when they heard the song — and that’s definitely a good thing. No matter what creative direction Foxtrot has taken with their work, they’ve all been received by listeners incredibly well.
The cinematography behind “Battered & Blue” is a stark contrast to their second most recent video, “Down & Out,” which featured an action movie plot and exquisitely shot and edited scenes. What we have here is one take of drummer Jimmy Iovine dancing in a mink coat through the entirety of the song. As the band tells us in an email:
The idea for the video really came from us taking back creative control of our work and feeling like we could make exactly what we wanted. Our last video for “Down & Out” is a 5-minute movie with murder and gambling. This video is three minutes of Jimmy doing choreographed dances in a mink coat. The same band came up with both ideas. I think it goes to show that we can make different types of music, different kinds of videos, and still be ourselves. That’s what all of this new music is about: we feel we’re in control of our destiny and our product, and we’ve never been more confident about what we’re doing.
The good news doesn’t stop with the “Battered and Blue” video: along with that SXSW run (which featured a Nashville gig on March 9th), the band returns to Philly with plans to release new music and play a release show at Underground Arts on April 5th to celebrate.
