XPN’s Gotta Hear Song of the Week: “Slow Down” by Maverick Sabre

Meet Maverick Sabre. The English-Irish musician has made a record one reviewer has aptly called “unapologetically cool.” When I Woke Up is a collection of songs that fuses together R&B, touches of jazz, soul, reggae and hip-hop with understated ease.

Born in London in 1990, Michael Stafford was raised in Ireland, and began playing music in his early teens. He has two studio albums to his credit, and over the years he’s collaborated with various artists including the electronic Chase & Status, Irish rappers Terawrizt and Nu-Centz, and British rapper Professor Green. Sabre’s new album collects mid- to down-tempo songs that fit somewhere in the continuum of Massive Attack’s hazy trip-hop, and the grooves of Brit-soul group Soul II Soul.

Below, listen to “Slow Down” featuring British singer Jorja Smith.
