Hezekiah Jones shares contemplative new single “Kings of People”

Hezekiah Jonesdoesn’t need to be understood. Instead, the Philadelphia-based band makes it clear on their latest single, “Kings of People,” that they prefer to dwell in their own universe, untouched by the headaches and heartbreaks of reality. With an ever-evolving cast of musicians bound together by the songwriting talent of Raphael Cutrufello, they create contemplative folk music.

Starting off deceptively simple with soft finger plucking, it isn’t long until the rest of the instruments rush in. Gentle keys and an ambling bassline mirror Cutrufello’s desire to keep things simple as he sings “when I find myself confused, I just stop trying.”

During the lush build-up, it seems like the band is finally starting to take their own advice and let go of the things they can’t change. Stepping away from the difficult stuff, they embrace foggy thoughts, half-truths, and ambivalence. A quaint track, there’s a mellow sense of acceptance as Cutrufello sings, “we don’t need everything at our fingertips / if you want to lighten up then let it slip.” Coming full circle, they no longer have to hold their tounges or worry about pleasing others. Content with their little corner of the world, the soothing track makes it seem like a pretty great place to be.
