Monday 7/17: Irreversible Entanglements at Solar Myth
This Philly-based, free jazz group will be headlining the coffee bar/record store/venue Solar Myth on July 17th. The quintet consists of drums, bass, trumpet, saxophone, and poetry by vocalist Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother), and specializes in improvisation. Their most recent album Open theGates, was released in 2021 containing longform, creative compositions and improvisations. With a goal of promoting Black liberation, Irreversible Entanglements will open your mind musically and lyrically. The group will reprise their show at Solar Myth on the following night. // 8 p.m., $30.90, 21+
Tuesday 7/18: Red Fang at Phantom Power
Leading up to a summer tour with Clutch and Dinosaur Jr., Portland, OR classic thrash band Red Fang will headline three shows in mid July, including a set at Phantom Power in Millersville with Teen Mortgage. Red Fang released their debut album in 2005, and have been going strong since then with their most recent album Arrows dropping in 2021. Over the years, this band has been affiliated with Sargent House, Relapse Records, and Kill Rock Stars. If you enjoy hard rock, head-banging, and loud, catchy guitar hooks, this band is built for you. // 7 p.m., $33, 18+
Wednesday 7/19: Mdou Moctar at Ardmore Music Hall
By combining western rock elements with the Sub-Saharan music of his home-country of Niger, Mdou Moctar offers a special sound and experience to the concert-going population of the Philly area. He and his band will appear at Ardmore Music Hall on July 19th with support from Meg Baird. Moctar is an extremely skilled guitarist, which is reflected throughout his newest project Afrique Victime. The song “Chismiten” is very catchy and fast-paced, driving it to become a recent favorite from Moctar’s catalog. // 8 p.m., $22 and up, 21+
Wednesday 7/19: Hurray for the Riff Raff at Arden Gild Hall
Alynda Segarra, a Bronx-born explorer, is bringing their long-running Americana folk group Hurray for the Riff Raff to the Arden Gild Hall in Arden, DE on July 19th. Currently based in New Orleans, Segurra released their newest project LIFE ON EARTH in 2022, and the album’s self-proclaimed “nature punk” style features elements of country, indie pop, and lo-fi folk music. Their current tour includes folk artist Squirrell Flower, and boasts the full Hurray band. With an extensive back-catalog of seven albums dating back to 2009, Segurra’s sound and craft has been long in the works. // 5:30 p.m., $33.99, AA
Wednesday 7/19: Chill Moody at The Mann Center
As the Mann Center’s artist in residence for the summer of 2023, Philly rapper Chill Moody has turned his sights to celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with a series of concerts…and celebrating his own music a little bit along the way. This Wednesday, Chill delivers a free concert at The Mann’s TD Pavilion with Darin Atwater’s Black Metropolis and the Philadelphia Orcherstra, accompanying highlights from his decade-plus output, giving his unique lyrical perspective on growing up in Philly and carving your own lane to success. // 8:00 p.m., FREE, AA
Thursday 7/20: Amos Lee at The Mann Center
Philadelphia favorite Amos Lee is bringing a grand performance to the Mann Center’s TD Pavilion on July 20th. Lee will be joined by The Philadelphia Orchestra onstage to play enhanced versions of his songs, backed by over 100 musicians. In June, Lee released three videos to his YouTube channel to preview the show, each one featuring a string quartet and stripped versions of notable tracks from his catalog, including an unreleased song titled “Madison.” Check out these videos for a small taste of what’s to come at The Mann. // 8:00 p.m., $29.50 and up, AA
Thursday 7/20: Jenny Lewis at The Met Philly
Giddy Up! Jenny Lewis rides into Philly this Thursday, performing at The Met in promotion of her new record Joy’All. Joy’All, literally “joy to all,” marks the fifth solo record from the newly Nashville based singer-songwriter and is meant to evoke a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. Always searching for a new sonic path to adventure into, Lewis teamed up with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb, pulling inspiration from the warm sounds of live country music as well as classic soul and modern indie folk to create a cordial group of tracks that invites listeners in with open arms. Lewis will be joined by Cass McCombs and Hayden Pedigo for the all ages show. // 7 p.m., $35 and up, AA
Thursday 7/20: De Tierra Caliente at Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks
The music of De Tierra Caliente fills the air with bright colors and Caribbean rhythms, tempting listeners to get up and dance. Blending both Latin and Caribbean traditions, the fusion band has released two full length projects, 2015’s Nadie Es Profeta and 2018’s Traigo Alegria. Each song delivers the flavors of South America to U.S audiences; with carefree and intoxicating lyricism sung sometimes in English, sometimes in Spanish, and sometimes in Portuguese. De Tierra Caliente spices up the Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks this Thursday. // 7:30 p.m., free, AA
Friday 7/21: Dave Matthews Band at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion
Legendary folk rock outfit Dave Matthews Band released their 10th studio album, Walk Around the Moon, back in May. The record focused on themes of impermanence, liberation, and the gentler side of rock music, taking the band ever further away from the desire-filled college rock of Crash. With Dave’s ever evolving perspective on songwriting and a number of lineup changes since 2008, including Jeff Coffin, Rashawn Ross and Tim Reynolds, walking around the moon is a fitting analogy, as both Dave and the band are worlds away from their former selves. The 56 year old is spry as ever however, still touring and selling out shows around the globe with his captivating blend of jazz and rock and roll. Friday 7/21: Nanna at Union Transfer
Atmospheric folk artist, and lead singer of Of Monsters And Men, Nanna comes to Union Transfer on Friday as part of her “Disaster Master” tour. Her debut album, How To Start A Garden came from a desire to branch out and experiment with her own style and voice, separate from her lead role in the “Little Talks” group. Sitting down with Consequence, Nanna explained the thought process behind the record, saying that she was inspired by old Godzilla movies, being a hermit kid who loved poetry, and how meaningful it was to release a song in her native Icelandic language. The former culminated in the hit single “Godzilla” which encapsulates the entire range of emotions throughout How To Start A Garden, and is sure to be a standout moment during her performance in Philly. // 8 p.m., $31, AA
Friday 7/21: Killer Mike at Franklin Music Hall
Rapper, actor, and social justice activist Killer Mike dropped his first solo record in 11 years, Michael, this June. While it’s flown a bit under the radar, the project was a catharsis of sorts for the hip-hop star, deeply personal and relatable, touching on topics of parenthood and religion while still doubling down on bars about social reform. Mike was awarded Billboard’s first-ever Change Maker Award in 2020, and has continued to champion the ideas from his ceremonial speech, “You are artists and your goal should be to express the very reality around you in the very most beautiful or ugliest of ways you see fit.” Killer Mike promises to shake the room at Franklin Music Hall on Friday. // 8:30 p.m., $35, AA
Saturday 7/22: Stereo League at Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia
Rock and soul trio Stereo League is gigging around the region in support of their upcoming EP Perfect Paradise, and they’re coming your way this Saturday. Their newest single “Down & Out” sets the tone for their forthcoming project, emphasizing their retro style and soulful roots. They’ll be joined by local artists Nik Greeley and Taylor Kelly for this momentous occasion, so make sure to stop by to support some of Philly’s premier funk acts and to get your groove on. // 8 p.m., $15 and up, 21+
Saturday 7/22: Sweet Juice Fest at Rigby Mansion
Returning for their second year, Rigby Mansion will be hosting the newly annual Sweet Juice Fest, a summer extravaganza of distinctly chill proportions. Headlining this year’s festival is Shamir, a staple in the queer indie scene whose vocal expertise and genre experimentation will undoubtedly help to facilitate the event of the summer. Come out to Rigby Mansion on the 22nd to see Shamir alongside American Trappist, Brittany Ann Tranbaugh, and a slew of other Philly favorites. // 1:30 p.m., $20 and up, AA
Saturday 7/22: Velvet Rouge at Johnny Brenda’s
If you don’t already know, Velvet Rouge, led by The Voice alum Gina Zo, is an indie quartet whose words and sounds rival that of Stevie Nicks and Florence + The Machine, two of Zo’s biggest influences. Not to mention her voice, which brings a unique energy to the group’s sound all on its own. Embracing her newly disclosed queer identity, Zo shares a new side of herself in the band’s latest track “Faking It”, in which she discusses taking on the challenge of being oneself to the fullest extent. Catch Velvet Rouge at Johnny Brenda’s this week, as well as at this year’s XPoNential Fest on Sunday, September 24th. // 9 p.m., $12, 21+
Saturday 7/22: Rhett Miller at The Englewood
After emerging onto the scene as the lead vocalist of alt-country legends Old 97’s, Rhett Miller debuted as a solo folk singer-songwriter in 2002 with the LP The Instigator. Since then, he’s maintained a consistent position in the country music world, releasing his latest album The Misfit in 2022. Though he may go by many names in accordance with his album titles, the most fitting might just be The Traveler, as this year marks his twenty-first year as a touring solo act. Be sure to see him at The Englewood this Saturday to help commemorate such a milestone. // 8 p.m., $30, AA
Saturday 7/22: Lisa Loeb at Upper Merion Township Park
Famed singer-songwriter and philanthropist Lisa Loeb has had sweeping success in the music industry thus far, and she’s not stopping any time soon. Known for her ‘90s hits, children’s books and music, and benevolent efforts to support children in need, Loeb’s decades-long career extends past the music itself and functions as a strong force for the betterment of society as well. Whether you know her from smash hits like “Stay (I Missed You),” “I Do,” or any of her five children’s albums such as 2003’s Catch the Moon, you’ll surely be interested in singing along with her at Upper Merion Township Park this weekend. // 7 p.m., $22, AA
